Roots-type blowers operate continuously for many years with proper maintenance. In applications where a blower stoppage affects the entire process, such as wastewater treatment plants or pneumatic conveying lines, planned maintenance prevents downtime caused by failures.

Gearbox and bearing oil

Rotors operate oil-free in the air-contact chamber, while timing gears and bearings are lubricated with oil. The oil level must be regularly checked via the sight glass and changed at the operating hours recommended by the manufacturer or when the oil color darkens. Using oil with the wrong viscosity shortens gear and bearing life.

Suction filter

Blowers draw in a very large volume of air, and their filters can become dirty in a short time. A clogged filter creates pressure loss on the suction side, reduces flow rate, and causes the motor to draw more power. The filter must be cleaned or replaced at regular intervals depending on the ambient dust.

Belt and pulley

In belt-driven blowers, belt tension and pulley alignment must be checked. A loose belt slips, generating heat and wearing out, while an overly tight belt imposes unnecessary load on the bearings. Worn belts must be replaced as a set.

Vibration, noise, and temperature

Changes in normal operating noise, increased vibration, or rising casing temperature are usually the first signs of bearing wear, rotor contamination, or a relief valve issue. Regular recording of these values ensures that failures are detected before they escalate.

Relief valve and connections

The relief valve on the discharge line protects the blower from excessive pressure if the line becomes blocked. It must be checked periodically to ensure the valve operates properly and that flexible connections and silencers are undamaged.

  • Daily: Observation of noise, vibration, and temperature
  • Weekly: Oil level, filter condition
  • Periodic: Oil change, belt check, relief valve test
